Dear Diana,

My future In-Laws came to stay with my fiance and myself recently.They were to sleep on the sofa sleeper. As bedtime approached my fiance and future father-in-law were finishing watching a movie, seated on the sofa. My future Mother-in-Law having gotten ready for bed, announced "You two finish your movie, I'll just sleep here on the dining room floor." and proceeded to curl up under the table. As her husband and son jumped up to make up the sofa sleeper for her, I said "OK then.. goodnight" and went off to bed. Her manipulation works on them, but I was not going to give in. Did I do the right thing?

Of course you did the right thing.. How nice of you to allow your guest to sleep where she wanted to. I commend you on your thoughtfulness. You may want to speak to your fiance' about his need to insist that his mother sleep where he designates. If she was comfortable and happy where she was and didn't prove a danger to someone tripping and falling over her, then why shouldn't she sleep where she wanted.
